Simple And Easy Methods To Get Rid of Flies Quickly (Inside and Outside)

Flies represent a nightmare to everyone because their presence is so nagging and annoying. When there is a fly in the room, all you just do is waving your hands to make them go away, and by so doing, you look ridiculous to the others. So, in today’s article, we are going to show you a few methods for getting rid of these tiny pesky parasites. But, first you need to know several facts about them:

The lifespan of flies is usually a month, and within that period of time, they multiply a lot. The flying and speed are their physical attributes which makes them in an advantageous position over others. So, in order to destroy them, you need to know their weaknesses. Flies are attracted to smell (especially strong scent of some herbs and essential oils) and light. Therefore, try the following methods for elimination of flies in and out:

Method 1: Use Do It Yourself’ Fly Trap

Make your own fly trap and put it outdoors or indoors so to trap flies. It attracts them by using their primary instincts against them. Their strong affinity to light and odor will drag them into this trap. They won’t be capable of escaping because of the stimulus of light which is going to work against them. The plastic wrap will look like an invisible wall.

  • Apple cider vinegar – Trap

ACV is in fact, a fermented apple juice. Fermenting and rotting fruits are a real desert for flies. If you add the ACV with a dish soap, the trap will be deadlier. The tension of the liquid surface will be broken by the dish soap which will make them sink.

All you need is:

  • 2 cups of ACV
  • 1 tbsp. of liquid dish soap
  • Plastic wrap
  • Mason jar
  • Toothpick

Take the Mason jar and pour the 2 cups of ACV and 1 tbsp. of liquid dish soap into it. Stretch the plastic wrap over the Mason jar’s mouth in order to seal it completely. On the plastic trap, make multiple punctures with the toothpick and let the flies into the trap. The smell of ACV will attract them. You can put the trap wherever you want. As soon as you notice the dead flies inside the jar, throw them away and clean the jar.

# Fruit Trap

It has very similar effect just like the ACV trap. But, this trap doesn’t kill them. It just captures them efficiently, but it’s up to what you will do with them later. Also, this trap is cheaper than the previous one.

All you need is:

  • Rotten or overripe fruit
  • Plastic wrap
  • Bowl
  • A pair of scissors
  • Toothpick

Peel and chop the rotten fruit and put it in a bowl. Then, stretch the plastic wrap over the bowl and with the use of toothpick, make a few punctures on the plastic wrap. Thus, you’ll let the odor of the rotten fruit to spread, which will attract the flies. Put this trap wherever you want. As soon as you capture enough flies, put the bowl in a soapy water to kill them. Rinse it and set the trap once again. Or, you can make a few more traps and place them all around your house.

Method 2: Use ‘Do It Yourself’ Fly Repellent Spray

A large number of people prefer spraying pest-repellents to get rid of the annoying insects and bugs that can run around in our homes, however, these repellents are usually loaded with chemicals, which can result in a number of health complications in humans after a prolonged use. This is why we recommend you to use natural ingredients in order to prepare an all natural pest-repellent. You can use everything from essential oils, to peppermint and lemongrass, as they all have a strong scent which will repent flies.

All you need is:

  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 tbsp. of diluted liquid dish soap
  • 12 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • 10 drops of lemongrass essential oil
  • Spray bottle

In a spray bottle, pour the cup of water and add the 2 tbsp. of liquid dish soap. Then, add the 12 drops of peppermint essential and the 10 drops of the lemongrass essential oil in it. After you close the bottle, shake it well in order the ingredients to mix. Then, spray your home in order to prevent flies from entering in.

Method 3: Use Lavender Essential Oil

Use the lavender oil in a sponge to get rid of flies:

All you need is:

  • Lavender essential oil
  • Sponge
  • Jar with a lid

Start off by applying a few drops of lavender essential oil on the sponge as it has a strong scent, then place it into the jar and seal it with a lid. Let it sit covered for a few hours before  opening it slightly when placed in a room or wherever you want the flies to run away from.

Method 4: Use Cloves and Lemon

Cloves have a subtle scent which flies absolutely hate, and when combined with a lemon, you end up with one of the most efficient natural fly repellents out there.

All you need is:

  • Lemon (natural bug deterrent)
  • Cloves (flies detest the scent of cloves)

Start off by cutting a fresh lemon into halves, and stick the cloves into the pulp of the lemon halves. Place the preparation on the table and it will keep the flies away for good!

Additional Tips:

  • Clean the bowls where you had the rotting fruit stored as they will start smelling bad with time.
  • Wash the Mason jar or the glass bowl with soapy water before using it again.
  • Plant lavender, peppermint or lemongrass around your house.
  • Use citronella and eucalyptus essential oils to cast flies and other insects away.
